The High Priestess is the third card in the major arcana and represents intuition, inner wisdom, mystery, secrecy, the divine feminine and instincts. The High Priestess is represented by the number two as it’s connected to energies of inner peace, harmony, cooperation, femininity and empathy. The number two represents partnerships, relating to others and being tuned into the needs of others, making it a highly empathic and intuitive number.
The High Priestess is connected to the element of water and the zodiac signs Pisces and Cancer, as it’s associated with spirituality, sensitivity, emotions, intuition and illusion. This card symbolizes that your intuition, inner wisdom and instincts are being triggered and that these things will be your best guide in a situation.
This card is also connected to the Moon which represents emotions, intuition, soul, illusion, cycles and the goddess or divine feminine energy. Because the High Priestess is connected to things like illusion and mystery it means that you’ll have to trust your instincts and inner guiding system in order to be able to see the unseen. It can also represent secrets and things which are hidden from you or not being revealed to you.
The High Priestess Meaning
This card shows that you’re receiving intuitive insight about something and that your perception of this situation may be influenced by the power of your inner voice. The image on the card shows a woman draped in fabric, holding a scroll and sitting in between two pillars with a pomegranate decorated curtain behind her.
In the card the High Priestess has a crescent Moon by her feet representing her connection to her emotions and intuition and the curtain behind her shows that something is being hidden. On the black and white pillars beside her are the letters “B” and “J” which are said to represent Boaz (his strength) and Jachin (he will establish). This is said to represent duality, masculine and feminine energies and it’s also connected to the Temple of Solomon.
Therefore when the High Priestess comes up in a reading, it can show that you’re getting in touch with the divine feminine energies of mystery, intuition and the emotional realms and that things may not appear exactly as they are. Alternatively, the High Priestess can also represent things like secrets, hidden knowledge, spying, premonitions, discernment and voyeurism. Always look to the cards around it for clarification or to get a deeper meaning.
