The Moon is the nineteenth card in the major arcana and represents illusion, mystery, the subconscious, intuition and fear of the unknown. The Moon is represented by the number eighteen which breaks down to nine, so each number will have connections to the meaning of this card. The number eighteen is connected to things like strength, personal power, leadership and self-determination.
The Moon is connected to the element water and the zodiac sign Pisces, as it’s associated with emotions, fantasy and the psychic senses. This card can also represent deception, fears, things not appearing as they actually are and stepping out into the unknown.
This card is connected to the planet Neptune which represents illusion, spirituality, creativity and going with the flow. Because of this, the Moon can also be connected to things like hidden blessings or something that is buried beneath the surface.
The Moon Meaning
This card can show that not everything is as it seems with your current situation and that it will be best to follow the voice of your intuition. This card represents a journey into the unknown where things may feel uncertain and confusing and this is where the guidance of your inner voice comes in.
The image on the card shows a Moon in the night sky which is positioned between two pillars and above a small body of water. On the card, there is a dog and a wolf symbolizing both the domesticated and wild aspects of self. There’s also a crawfish crawling out of the water symbolizing the first stages of awareness.
So the Moon can represent a need to get in touch with the other aspects of yourself such as your shadow, instincts and inner wisdom. This card can be a message to utilize your instincts and intuition in a situation, as they will be your best guide. This can mean that you already have the answers within you and that you just need to trust your inner voice.
Therefore, when the Moon comes up in a reading it can represent something that’s uncertain where you may not have all the answers upfront which will require you to rely on your instincts. Alternatively, the Moon can also represent things like deception, subconscious fears, something hidden beneath the surface and emotional triggers. Always look to the cards around it for clarification or to get a deeper meaning.
