The Morrigan

The Morrigan is an Irish Goddess associated with battle, sovereignty, fertility, magick, prophecy, shapeshifting and death. Her names translates to mean Phantom Queen or Great Queen. She is one of the “Tuatha De Danann” or “People of the Goddess Danu” who are a divine, magical race.

The Morrigan is seen as a fierce, warrior Goddess and is connected to the death which occurs on the battlefield. She is known from the myth involving Cú Chulainn who is a demigod, warrior and hero. In the myth, she comes to Cú Chulainn when he’s resting after a battle and offers her love to him. He rejects her advances and then she declares him her enemy and swears to destroy him in battle. In the myth she is depicted as a woman with red hair, red eyebrows and wearing a red cloak while riding a chariot.

The Morrigan is a shapeshifter and can take on the form of different animals such as a crow, eel, wolf and white cow. She can also appear as a beautiful woman or a hag. She was known to sometimes take the form of a crow and fly above warriors during battle, signifying their death. The Morrigan is also a Goddess of sovereignty and guardian of the land who would give her approval to kings before they were allowed to rule.

In Irish mythology her mother is seen as being Ernmas, who is a Goddess of the earth, the land and fertility. The Morrigan is also connected to the Goddesses Badb and Macha who are portrayed in some myths as her sisters.

Signs that The Morrigan is Calling You

The Morrigan will show up in your life when it may be time for you to stand your ground, fight for what you believe in and embrace your independence. She can also appear in your life when you’re in need of change and need to get in touch with your inner strength. You may also be awakening to your own power as well as your mystical and intuitive abilities.

She is deeply connected to magic, prophecy and fate and can symbolize a time in your life where destiny is at play. This may be a time where you’re developing your intuitive abilities and possibly even learning a form of divination to help you communicate with the divine. Symbols associated with her are crows and crow feathers, swords, the shapeshifter, the number three and white cows. Seeing any of these symbols repeatedly can be signs that she’s trying to get your attention.

The Morrigan is a Goddess of death and can help the soul transition by acting as a guide. She was known to appear to warriors in battle as an omen of their imminent death. She can be symbolic for the ending of one life, or chapter, and the transitional period between the old and the new. If she starts to appear in your life she may be guiding you towards great change and transformation.

Working with The Morrigan

There are many ways to work with The Morrigan and as with any Goddess or deity creating some kind of altar no matter how simple or elaborate is a great place to start. For your altar you can add statues, artwork, candles and symbols of crows, an athame, Celtic knots and symbols of divination. This is your way of creating a sacred space to connect with her energy.

You can also call to her by saying a simple prayer like “The Morrigan, Goddess of war and sovereignty, please lend me your strength to fight for justice.” You can create your own unique prayer or invocation to her as well, whatever feels right to you. Once you have called out to her allow yourself to sit in quiet meditation for a few minutes so that you can start to feel and connect with her energy.

Pay attention to any messages, feelings or sensations that come through at this time and over time you will start to become more familiar with her energy. If you feel so inclined you can even write these things down in a journal which you can refer back to while you’re learning how to connect with Goddess energy. Always be sure to leave some kind of offering when working with any deity and with The Morrigan you can leave things like wine, whiskey, mead, bread, beer, cheese or even something you make yourself.

You can even do things like learn a form of divination or start a magickal practice. Whatever is available to you and whatever you feel most called to in order to honor her energy. These are simple ways that you can begin connecting with The Morrigan and with time and practice you’ll be able to recognize her energy more easily.
